Best Toggl Alternative for Freelancers in 2026

Toggl Track is great software — but it's priced for teams and doesn't include invoicing. Here's what solo freelancers should use instead.

Published May 27, 2026

Toggl Track is one of the best-known time tracking tools, and its core product genuinely works well. But it's designed and priced for teams — and if you're a solo freelancer, you're paying for structure you don't need.

What Toggl Track gets right

The timer is clean. The mobile app is fast. The reporting is detailed. Toggl Track has been around long enough to have a polished product, and for tracking time across projects and clients, it does the job reliably.

Where the friction starts

The free plan is limited. Toggl's free plan removes several things freelancers actually need: no client billing rates, no saved project rates, and limited reporting. It's enough for basic tracking, but not for billing clients.

Paid plans start at $9 per user per month. That's $108 per year for one person — team pricing for solo use.

Invoicing isn't part of Toggl. Toggl Track doesn't generate invoices. You track your time, then need a separate tool to create and send a bill. That gap matters when you're invoicing clients weekly.

Daily billing isn't supported. If you charge a day rate rather than hourly, Toggl doesn't have a native way to log that. You're stuck either manually entering hours or using workarounds.

A cleaner alternative for solo freelancers

Cashlog skips the configuration and goes straight to the work. Set your hourly rate, add a client, and start tracking. Your earnings update live as the timer runs.

When it's time to invoice, you don't open another tool. Select the sessions, click generate — a professional PDF invoice is ready to send, with your business details, the client's name, a session breakdown, and VAT if applicable.

If you charge a day rate, log a half day or full day in one click. No workaround, no manual calculation.

The bottom line

Toggl Track is excellent time tracking software. If you're already embedded in its ecosystem or need it for a team, it makes sense. If you're a solo freelancer who wants to track time and invoice clients without paying for team infrastructure you'll never use — Cashlog is the simpler path.
